Dr. Gamel Nasser Adam was on Tuesday, July 25, 2017 introduced as the new Vice President (Academics) of the Islamic University College, Ghana at a ceremony held in the IUCG Conference Hall. Dr. Nasser is replacing Nana Dr. Konena G. Erbynn who has served in that office for about five years. He thus becomes the fourth Vice President of the University College since its inception.
Dr. Nasser until his appointment as the Vice President of the IUCG, was a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, Legon. He served for two terms as the Head of the Modern Languages Department and for two years as a member of the Executive Committee of University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). He was a board member of the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) from 2009 to 2015 and has served in numerous committees such as the Appointments and Promotions Committee, and Infrastructure Committee of the NCTE.
He was also a member of the Council of the University for Development Studies as well as the Governing Council of Bagabaga College of Education. As the Vice President in charge of academic affairs, Dr. Nasser is responsible for formulating and reviewing of qualitative and pragmatic policies on matters relating to academics as well as driving IUCG's "vision to become the leading provider of academic excellence and moral uprightness in tertiary education in Ghana."
Having paid tribute to management and his predecessors for holding the fort of the University College, Dr. Nasser outlined his strategic plan aimed at propelling the IUCG to new heights. According to him, his vision is to see to it that the IUCG attains Presidential Charter in the shortest possible time. The framework for achieving this vision will be within the guidelines of the National Council for Tertiary Education and the National Accreditation Board. Dr. Nasser indicated that his immediate tasks include, recruiting more senior lecturers, creating new faculties, developing staff capacity, increasing student enrolment etc. For this to come to fruition, he underscored, "we need to redouble our efforts."
Dr. Gamel Nasser holds B.A. (Combined Honours) degree in French and Russian, from University of Ghana, Legon and PhD (Philology – Russian) from Pushkin Institute, Moscow.
On his part, Nana Dr. Konena G. Erbynn, the new Head of Quality Assurance Unit, expressed gratitude to all staff for their unflinching support to him during his tenure and promised extending same to the new Vice President.
In his closing remarks, Dr. Mohsen Maarefi, President of the IUCG paid glowing tribute to Nana Dr. Konena G. Erbynn and Dr. Ernest Kofi Awanta (former Head of Quality Assurance Unit) for their various contributions in ensuring IUCG maintains its enviable record of providing quality tertiary education for the youth. He also thanked and wished Dr. Nasser well in accepting the offer to undertake this important role that has the potential to change the fortunes of the IUCG.
