IUCG Debate Society holds fresher’s championship debate

debate1

As part of efforts to cultivate in students democratic culture and leadership; improve their public speaking skills and confidence, and strengthen students analytical skills, the Islamic University Debate Society (IUDS) organized a Debate Championship among students.

Key activities observed at the championship included debate, public speaking, recitation of poem among others.

The outstanding performance was by debaters who argued on the motion “This House Must Limit Anas Aremeyaw Anas,” critiquing the journalistic style of the ace journalist, Anas Armiyaw Anas.

debate5The proponents of the motion argued “the methods he uses to secure his information were unethical according to the code of ethics of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) hence the need for his restriction.”

In contrast, opponents to the motion believe that Anas deserves commendation for his good work in exposing corruption in the society, thus calling the proponents of the motion “enemies of freedom of speech.”

In buttressing their points, they highlighted some of Anas’ works including the Burger Story (1999); Torture on the High Seas (July, 2003); Bole Rebel Raid (April 2005); Soja Bar Prostitution (Sept. 2007); Passport Scandal (April, 2006) among others.

They therefore called on the House to throw out the request of the proponents and rather better equip Anas to continue his good work.debate4

Other performances displayed were public speaking and poem recital. Prominent among performers of these segments were the winner of the 2014 Ghana Universities Debate Championship (GUDC), Mr. Prince Abu (University of Ghana Legon) and a leading and founding member of IUDS Madam Tasnim Mohammed. While Mr. Prince demonstrated his prowess in public speaking, Madam Tasnim read a poem illustrating the qualities of African women.

The intellectual exercise, held at Islamic University College on November 23, 2015 intends to unearth students’ potential in public speaking and improve their civic knowledge. It was highly patronized by IUCGians and students of other Universities including the University of Ghana

The winning teams were crowned with awards while other participants were honored with certificate of participation.
